Can TV Be Educational?

TV

There's always a debate raging about how much TV children and teens should watch in a day. But the AAP recently released new guidelines that rescinded their strict no-TV-under-two rule, moving toward a commonsense paradigm. In other words, with a little common sense, TV can be a positive influence in a child's life.

Here are a few tips to keep your child's TV consumption healthy and educational.

1. All in Moderation

Although the AAP has changed their guidelines, it's important to set a realistic time limit on TV for your kids. According to recent studies, most parents already limit their children's TV time each day.

2. Keep it Interactive

Screen time should be interactive, studies have shown. Allow kids to watch shows and play games that stimulate their brains, ask questions, and require interactivity. Passive TV consumption isn't usually educational.

3. Watch with Them

Although you're probably not enthralled with the latest episode of Daniel Tiger, make sure you know what your kids are watching. Monitor not only the amount of TV they watch but also the content. Make sure their shows and movies are age-appropriate and that they won't be kept up by scary or confusing content.

4. Use YouTube

It's incredible how many educational channels there are on YouTube. Check out the great videos on animals, science, history, and more with your kids.

TV can be a great educational tool if it's used correctly. Give us a call to find the perfect TV for your family.
