Smart Appliances: Worth it or Skip it?

Rent Furniture

Are "smart appliances" worth the extra price? In some cases, maybe, but in others it may be better to stick with your regular old machines. Here's our breakdown of where to choose "smart" and when to stick to "dumb."

Thermostats? Yes, But at a Cost

Wireless thermostats are a great option for convenience. It can show you how much money you spend monthly on heating and cooling, and lets your remotely manage your home's temperature. It's a neat device, for sure. But it requires that you already have central air in every room of your house, which can be expensive. Other cooling options, like portable AC units, are often more realistic.

Ovens? Probably not.

Wi-fi enabled ovens are certainly impressive with their remote pre-heating functions and internet-connected touch screens. But pre-heating while away seems a bit unsafe, and you probably already have a screen in your hand to look up recipes from. If you're looking for luxury in your oven range, look for a model with Easy-touch electronic controls and self-cleaning functions.

Coffee Maker? Maybe.

Don't get us wrong; we love coffee. But even for the most coffee-obsessed among us, smart coffee makers just don't seem to offer much more than regular ol' models. Smart coffee makers allow you to start remotely and monitoring your brewing process from your phone and see how much longer you have to wait for your cup of joe. But since most coffee makers allow you to schedule your next brew, these extra features don't seem necessary.
